Japow’s last frontier: Tohoku

For the passionate japow lover on a relentless quest for the finest powder, Tohoku emerges as a dream destination. Tucked away in the northern reaches of Honshu, Tohoku is a paradise where pristine slopes, consistent snowfall, low temperatures, and untouched powder await your discovery. This region, often overshadowed by more famous Japanese ski areas, offers an exclusive, uncrowded experience, perfect for those seeking fresh tracks and unspoiled terrain.

This tour includes two days at Hakkoda, one of Japan’s traditional backcountry/freeride areas and one of the few ropeway-accessed ski options, alongside Asahidake and Kurodake in Hokkaido. Additionally, you’ll spend three days based in Morioka, strategically located to chase the best powder across the resorts of Geto Kogen, Shizukuishi Ski Resort, Amiharionsen Ski Resort, Iwate Kogen Snow Park, Akita-Hachimantai Ski Resort, Appi-Kogen, Hachimantai Resort, Ani Ski Resort, or Tazawako Snow Resort.

Off the slopes, immerse yourself in the soothing embrace of traditional onsen, relish the flavors of local cuisine, and experience the genuine warmth of nostalgic Japanese hospitality. This isn’t just a ski trip; it’s a journey to discover an off-the-beaten-path region with the most preserved traditions.

This package caters to veterans of japow looking for new experiences, or for those searching for fresh lines and untracked powder without any competition. Explore the hidden gems of Tohoku and shred your way through some of Japan’s finest, yet undiscovered, powder fields.

The Area

Tohoku, literally meaning “North East Region,” is the northern jewel of Honshu, Japan’s main island. Encompassing the prefectures of Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi, and Fukushima, Tohoku is renowned for its majestic mountains, serene lakes, inviting hot springs, and rugged winters. Notably, it boasts the lowest population density in all of Japan. The Tohoku region’s Pacific coast faced significant devastation during the earthquake and tsunami on March 11th, 2011, yet it has resiliently recovered and continues to be a region of remarkable beauty and adventure.

Because of its geography, Tokoku has exceptional snow conditions: very low temperatures similar to Hokkaido that in combination with the proximity of the Sea of Japan, ensures a continuous supply of powder.

This rural and scarcely explored area remains largely untouched by international tourism, offering superb side country terrain and powder snow rarely tracked by the few local skiers.
